Players Play. Coaches Coach. Fans Cheer.
It is hard for enthusiastic parents / guardians and supporters not to issue well-meaning instructions from the stands. However, when those instructions are not consistent with the coaches' direction, it creates stress and confusion for the player. Parents / Guardians should also support the coaches in addressing the sacrifices and challenges involved in being part of a team . Players are encouraged to learn responsibility by calling the coach themselves when they are unable to make practices or games. Similarly, when a player has a conflict with their coach, a fellow player, etc. they should personally initiate the resolution process and adhere to the grievance procedure outlined below:
The following steps should be taken to resolve any conflict:
The Club participates in the Puget Sound Traveling League (PSTL), which promotes a competitive approach to the game. The League is an AAU affiliated not-for-profit program and the Washington State High School Basketball rules of play apply. PSTL geographical boundaries span Renton to North Bend to Edmonds and games and tournaments are scheduled throughout this area. The PSTL season runs October through March inclusive of tournament play.
Being involved in a competitive program means players will have to earn game time. Each select team will have a 12 person roster (maximum) and game time will be awarded at the coaches' discretion. Factors that guide the coaches in determining game time for players include but are not limited to:
The typical time commitment for players includes mandatory twice weekly practices with one to two games per weekend. Some of the Select Teams will schedule a third optional practice depending on gym time, player availability, etc. Additionally, each team will participate in a minimum of two tournaments per season. Some of the Select Teams will schedule additional tournament play after team collaboration.
MIGB Booster Club organizers and coaches understand that Select Basketball may not be the only extracurricular activity for some players. Coaches are expected to be tolerant of those who choose to play multiple sports or who are engaged in other activities, as long as conflicts are reasonable and not disruptive to the team. Attending practice consistently will enhance a player's potential to contribute to their team, so this will inevitably influence the coaches' decisions about playing time.
Missing practices can inhibit a player's knowledge of strategies, plays, etc. and affect their ability to contribute to team performance. When missing practice is unavoidable, the player herself should contact the coach and explain the reason. This enhances the player-coach relationship and emphasizes team commitment.
MIGB coaches are encouraged to promote healthy balance and support players in prioritizing personal, family and scholastic obligations before basketball. That said, players who are emotionally and physically best prepared to advance their team will play the most.
