Playing Up Policy

Updated 9/7/2010

The Mercer Island Girls Basketball Booster Club met Monday, August 30, 2010. After discussion, it was the consensus of the board to further clarify the policy on "playing up".

 1) 5th grade level teams: 4th graders are eligible and encouraged to try out for the Maroon and White 5th grade teams as we do not currently have a 4th grade team. The number of spots for 4th graders will be determined at the time of the tryouts. Factors that determine 4th graders making a 5th grade team are the number of 5th graders trying out, 5th grader skills and the skills of the 4th graders.

2) 6th/7th/8th grade level teams: A number of factors led the board to decide that players at these grade levels will not be eligible to play up, with one specific exception. Since the original ‘playing up' policy was adopted MIGB has grown in success and popularity. When the decision was made to allow playing up five years ago, MIGB had trouble fielding teams at some grade levels. Back then, having a player play up did not cut another player out at that grade level. Currently we have many more girls trying out for MIGB. One of the tenants of MIGB is to allow as many Island Girls as are capable to play at the select level. The board wants to avoid a situation where a girl playing up causes a girl at grade level to be cut from the team that would have otherwise made the team. Athletes develop at different rates and times and cutting any player risks losing that player, who might have otherwise developed, contributed and enjoyed the game for years. Unfortunately, this has happened. Further, a player playing up may prevent someone at that grade level from fully developing in her natural position.
There is also great value in playing with kids your own grade. Players that play up often times have relationship issues when they age out and have to play with their own age group, ie 8th grade.
